Fireweed is a perennial grass that thrives in open areas and is common throughout Finland. Fireweed is one of the commercial herbs in Finland, and can be consumed as tea mixtures.
Fireweed leafs and flowers can be used as herbal remedies. The tanning substances they contain reduce the mucous membranes, cleanse the wounds and suppress bleeding. Fireweed also has an anti-inflammatory effect and has been used as a gargle for mouth and throat infections. In folk medicine, it has been used to treat stomach ailments.
